BA (Hons) Applied Professional Studies (Leadership and Management)

Introduction

This innovative programme is aimed at those wishing to learn how to work effectively with others, to develop their management and leadership thinking and is vocationally relevant.  It provides an ideal opportunity to gain a Level 6 qualification of 120 higher education credits within a year and embeds academic learning of management and leadership theories.  There is the added value of the Institute of Leadership and Management’s (ILM) Level 6 Award in Management.

You will attend the University College for a half day each week for 18 week duration to complete the two taught modules, whilst the other two modules are delivered by an online learning mode and workplace study format.  Sessions are delivered through lectures, workshops, tutorials guest speakers and action learning sets.

Entry Requirements

  • Foundation Degree in Business, Business Management, Leadership and Management, Hospitality Management or similar
  • Overall average of 55%+ for Level 5 studies
  • Be in employment whether full time, part time or voluntary

Module Information

Developing Skills for the Executive Manager (incorporates ILM’s Developing the Executive Manager)

This module is to enable you to develop knowledge and skills relevant to the manager role with emphasis on people management activities e.g. interviewing, performance appraisal and talent development, grievance and disciplinary management.

Developing Skills for Business Leadership

This module is to enable you to contribute to your own personal development in coaching and mentoring capabilities and leadership through increased knowledge and skills in these activities.

Work Based Study (incorporates ILM’s Critical Thinking and Research Skills in Management)

This module draws its content from your work based learning setting, other academic learning and professional development.  You will produce a piece of sustained writing and research into an area of Leadership and Management of your choice.  You will conduct this work within an appropriate research framework and work based environment with guidance from a University College Tutor.

 Accrediting and Building on Learning

This module draws its content from your identification and evaluation of previous and newly acquired professional and academic related learning in leadership and management.  You will develop a portfolio in alignment with the National Occupational Standards in Leadership and Management to record, reflect and enhance your knowledge and skills in facilitating change, working with people, providing direction and managing self and personal skills.

Career Opportunities

On successful completion of this programme, students may choose to progress to the MA in Leadership and Management which has the Institute of Leadership and Management’s Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Leadership embedded and students will receive both qualifications from the University College and the ILM.
