Introduction
Science is an exciting subject, it is all around us so it is easy to engage pupils. Every pupil is taught science and it is a priority subject, especially if you can teach Chemistry or Physics. We will train you to carry out imaginative, interactive lessons where every type of learner is involved. Being a hands on subject it is important for you to be able to carry out safe practical work and we will develop your skills in this area.
You should train to teach science at UCP Marjon because we have a long standing reputation for producing excellent science teachers. Schools like to assist with the training of UCP Marjon science student teachers and then they want to employ them! The University College will support you at every stage of the course to ensure that you develop into a successful teacher.
Science offers a very exciting set of subjects to teach. It encompasses traditional physics, chemistry and biology but also engineering, rural science, geology, psychology and the public understanding of science. Science teachers awaken pupils to the universe around them and how it works. Science is a real national priority area.
This course equips you to bring the outside world into your science teaching or take pupils out to look at the world around them.

Entry Requirements
- An honours degree with a large Science content, typically a 2:2
- Science A levels
- GCSE Maths and English (grade C or above) before application
- Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Enhanced Disclosure
- Meet the Secretary of State’s requirements for physical and mental fitness to teach as detailed in ‘Fit to Teach’
- Clearly and accurately communicate both spoken and written English
- Candidates must take part in an individual interview and/or a group interview with representatives from schools as well as University College tutors

- Science with Biology - you will be trained to teach Science to Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils and Biology to A-level standard
- Science with Chemistry - you will be trained to teach Science to Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils and Chemistry to A-level standard
- Science with Physics - you will be trained to teach Science to Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils and Physics to A-level standard

You work with the best science departments in the South West and with the support of committed mentors in schools who guide you as you progress as a student teacher.

PGCE Secondary Biology Overview
Biology is a popular science choice at A-level and, it is a key component of Science in the National Curriculum, and is taken as a separate GCSE option in many schools. The PGCE Secondary Biology Programme is designed to prepare students for teaching all aspects of science to at least Key Stage 3, and biology at GCSE and A-level. The programme provides the opportunity for practical activities in the course subject study days.
PGCE Secondary Chemistry Overview
Chemistry is a science which is still offered as a choice at A-level, and in recent years has increased in popularity. It is a key component of Science in the National Curriculum, it is also being offered as a separate GCSE option in many schools. The PGCE Secondary Chemistry Programme is designed to prepare students for teaching all aspects of science to at least Key Stage 3, and chemistry at GCSE and A-level. The programme provides the opportunity for practical activties in the course subject study days.
A possible pathway to acheive this would be to take a 6 month Subject Knowledge Enhancement Chemistry course; this would be a condition of your PGCE offer.
PGCE Secondary Physics Overview
Physics has experienced a decline in numbers of pupils taking the subject in recent years, however physics remains a valid science choice at A-level. It is a key component of Science in the National Curriculum, it is also being offered as a separate GCSE option in many schools. The PGCE Secondary Physics Programme is designed to prepare students for teaching all aspects of science to at least Key Stage 3, and physics at GCSE and A-level. The programme provides the opportunity for practical activties in the course subject study days.
A possible pathway to achieve this would be to take a Subject Knowledge Enhancement Physics course; this would be a condition of your PGCE offer.
