PGCE Secondary Physical Education
Introduction
Student teachers will become engaged in critically analysing the role of Physical Education within an inclusive and balanced curriculum. They will experience an extensive programme empowering them to deliver Physical Education in both practical and theoretical settings. The programme creatively contextualises key areas of subject knowledge within the curriculum. Core content will require student teachers to embed learning and teaching concepts through a wide range of practical activities, both traditional and alternative in nature.
Student teachers will have access to an immediate experiential resource base, including a wealth of teaching materials and staff expertise.
A student teachers experience is enriched by opportunities to complete additional teaching awards, coaching awards and school-based continuing professional development (CPD) modules, complementing the core programme. In addition, they will enjoy the opportunity to undertake school-based placements across the South West and London, and will be able to tailor action research to extend their repertoire of teaching strategies. As such, student teachers will be involved in the design of a personalised programme to ensure your training needs are addressed.
The programme is challenging and intensive whilst being immensely enjoyable; we build a strong culture of support within the group and work on the ethos of collaborative learning.

Module Information
The programme consists of 3 modules.
2 of these, General Professional Studies and Applied Subject Studies prepare you to teach across the whole range of the school physical education curriculum from 11 to 16 and the core components of A level Physical Education/sport studies. This involves knowledge of the content, recommended teaching approaches and assessment requirements for the National Curriculum for physical education. We will address how pupils learn, effective teaching strategies and models of pupil progression. There will be a strong focus on enquiry based learning, the processes involved in learning and the development of pupils as independent learners. We examine how to learn in, through and about physical education.
The third module, The Practice of Education, allows you to apply this learning with pupils in schools: this is a progressive process, and gradually builds up over the programme with plenty of opportunity for you to build your confidence and to reflect upon your practice.
