MA Youth and Community Work

Introduction

This challenging, full-time or part time programme provides an opportunity for students to gain both a degree at Masters Level and a professional qualification in Youth and Community Work. The programme combines practical fieldwork experience with academic study.

Postgraduate Diploma: 1 Year Full-Time or 2 Years Part-time; upon completion of the PG Diploma students can exit with that award, interrupt and return in a subsequent year, or proceed to submit a MA dissertation: 1 Year Part-Time

Entry Requirements

  • One-year’s experience (paid, voluntary, full-time or part-time) of youth and community work
  • A relevant first degree
  • An understanding of youth and community work, as well as a commitment to the value base of the course.

Module Information

The programme offers a stimulating and challenging series of taught modules relevant to current professional practice in Youth and Community Work: 
Issues and Interventions 1 – Youth & Community Work Context, Principles and Practice
Issues and Interventions 2 – Anti-oppressive Practice: Ethics, Values and Professional Identity
Developing Interpersonal Communication and Groupwork
Management in Youth & Community Work


Integral to the programme is the development of Professional Practice: There are two Fieldwork Placements that are undertaken alongside the taught element of the programme.

Programme Structure

Full-Time 1 Year
Semester A:  Students study five taught modules over two and a half days per week at the University College; plus students spend 148 hours on placement.
Semester B:  Students undertake a twelve week block placement from February to May.
Part-time 2 Years
Year 1 Semester A:  3 Modules over one and a half days per week
Year 1 Semester B:  148 hours of placement (15 hours per week for 10 weeks)
Year 2 Semester A:  2 modules over one and a half days per week
Year 2 Semester B:  444 hours: block placement (37 hours per week for 12 weeks)
On completion of the block placement and having successfully completed all the assessed work students may choose to accept a Postgraduate Diploma (with JNC) or continue working towards the award of MA. 

There is a two day taught element for the MA and the research and write up for the dissertation is carried out on a part-time basis in the following academic year.  Students have the option to interrupt and undertake their Masters dissertation at a later date.

The Government’s ‘Transforming Youth Work’, Every Child Matters and Youth Matters agendas mean that youth and community workers are in demand across a wide range of agencies both locally and nationally.  The University College has well established and on-going contact with local agencies, so the career prospects for graduates of the programme are very good.
