Some of Plymouth's rising sporting stars of the future have met the boss of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Fresh from helping to officially launch the city's Blue Mile initiative, Paul Deighton visited the University College Plymouth St Mark and St John campus at Derriford.

The chief executive of the London organising committee of the 2012 games met a host of sporting talent including UCP Marjon coaching and PE student Caroline Ball.

Hailed as a rising star, the 20-year-old open-water swimmer was awarded £400 through the Herald-backed Team Plymouth Making A Sporting Difference scheme.

Caroline said she was pleased Mr Deighton had made the effort to visit the college.

"We're quite a small area down here and I think we need a bit more support. His visit will help to inspire more athletes to be involved in sport."

Jamie Oxley, Sports Development Manager at the college, said: "The Blue Mile is a fantastic event and something which the college and its students are involved in.It's linked to 2012 in that it's raising aspirations. Having Paul here supporting the event, and visiting us, is a real bonus."

Sam Peach, Dean of Sport, Physical Education and Leisure at the University college, added: "It's really good to welcome him because sport is very high- profile here at UCP Marjon."

The Team Plymouth Making A Sporting Difference scheme has been set up by The Herald working in conjunction with UCP Marjon and Plymouth Sports Forum.

It has the financial backing of sponsors including the Architects Design Group, Tell Systems and Plymouth Pavilions.

It aims to give young athletes hoping to reach the Olympics in 2012 or beyond the cash help they need to maintain their vital training.
