Abimbola Alao, a lecturer in Creative Writing at University College Plymouth St Mark and St John recently won the 'BBC 24 Degree' competition. This competition was developed as a collaborative initiative between the BBC writers-room and the Royal Court as a way of nurturing and supporting a group of regional writers through the process of writing a play, TV script or radio play for consideration by the Court or by the BBC.

The project aims to bring together 24 writers from 6 cities: Belfast, Cardiff, Glasgow, Hull, Nottingham and Plymouth, for training, development and mentoring with BBC and Royal Court teams.

"24 Degrees" winners receive a £500 bursary plus expenses for group get-togethers, residential playwriting skills and industry craft weekends. The BBC and Royal Court will have a first-look agreement on work produced during the scheme.

Applicants were required to submit a CV, and a 10 page play. Abimbola submitted one of her plays titled 'Legal Stuff,' which became a winning entry.
